Stoughton Syttende May Festival 2019

Syttende Mai is a three day annual festival to celebrate the Norwegian heritage of Stoughton, Wisconsin. And everyone is Norwegian at Stoughton's annual Syttende Mai Festival celebrated here more than 100 years.

Celebrate the 17th of May and join in the fun at the Viking Strongman Competition, enjoy a Wisconsin craft brew, or get your Viking on in the annual 43rd Annual Canoe Race, and portage down the Yahara River.
Syttende Mai means "17th of May," and is Norway's Constitution Day, a national holiday celebrated in Norway with parades, red white and blue ribbons and flags, national costumes, and lots of fun. You can get an idea of what this day means to Norwegians by thinking about what the 4th of July means to you.

Stoughton celebrates Syttende Mai every year on the weekend nearest the 17th of May. This year's festival runs from Friday, May 17 through Sunday, May 21.

At the festival you'll find authentic Norwegian meatballs, krumkake, and lefse, the Sunday parade, hardanger fiddle music, even cheese curds! You'll see people of Norwegian ancestry dressed in bunads, traditional folk costumes. You'll find demonstrations of the traditional Norwegian arts of rosemling and hardanger embroidery.

You'll also see performances by our Norwegian Dancers, students from Stoughton High School, who practice and perform authentic Scandinavian dances throughout the year. Not to be missed!
