Bookmark and Share
Location Santa Fe
Dates July 10, 2012 - July 10, 2012
Description: Location: Santa Fe Community College

Learn to build an elegant Maloof-style rocking chair with Master Chair Maker John Moldovan in beautiful Santa Fe, New Mexico. Santa Fe Community College’s Continuing Education program offers a unique opportunity to study in Santa Fe with a talented woodworking artist and bring home a finished product. The class takes place over two weeks: July 10-14 and July 16-19. The rocking chair is considered among the more difficult pieces of furniture to make. The Maloof-style rocking chair’s design is inspired by Sam Maloof (1916-2009), a California furniture designer and woodworker. Workshop participants will receive templates, guidance and instructions to expedite the process and execute each step of the project. Workshop participants will complete a rocking chair over the course of two weeks, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday, July 10-14 and Monday through Thursday, July 16-19. There is no class on Sunday so students may take advantage of Santa Fe’s world-class art galleries and markets. Students work on their own chair and have some choice about size and design. Participants provide some of their own tools and supplies; the wood is provided. Some woodworking experience is required. Registration is limited to 10 students. The course fee is $799, and a $225 supply fee is due on the first day of class. There are no refunds after June 22. Instructor Moldovan will assist students in exploring form and function while incorporating strength and craftsmanship as they design and build their chairs. Moldovan creates hand made, custom, one-of-a-kind wood furniture. He lives and works with wood in Sonoma, California. He specializes in rocking chairs. Santa Fe Community College’s Maloof-style rocking chair workshop coincides with Santa Fe’s renowned International Folk Art Market. Santa Fe is a designated UNESCO Creative City and nationally recognized for its arts and crafts. It is the third largest art market in the U.S. For more information, call Santa Fe Community College’s Continuing Education Office at (***) ***-**** or visit www.sfcc.edu/maloof.
