The innocence and joy of first love explodes when caught in a duel between rival street gangs. While sparked by diminishing opportunity, this rivalry is driven by racial and cultural tension. The Sharks, a Puerto Rican gang, grapple with the difficulties of assimilating into American society. The Jets, descendants of previous immigrants, resist the newcomers. Jet member, Tony, falls in love with a beautiful Sharks girl, Maria. This forbidden love escalates the jeers and posturing to explosive crescendos with frightening consequences. This production marked Sondheims Broadway debut and his lyrics for Bernsteins magnificent score produced a towering score of hits including: The Jet Song, Somethings Coming, Maria, Cool, Tonight, I Feel Pretty, Officer Krupke, A Boy Like That, Somewhere. | |
